Horse Racing Betting Odds in Ireland at VivatBet

Irish racing is a strange beast. It doesn't follow the rules of other sports. A Tuesday at Dundalk can matter as much as a Saturday at Leopardstown if you know what you're looking at. And the betting? It's woven into the fabric of the thing so tightly that separating them feels almost pointless.

But there's a gap between putting a few euros on a horse and actually knowing what you're doing. That gap is where money gets lost.

This is the other side of it.

What Changed in Irish Racing This Year

Two things happened in 2026 that anyone having a bet needs to understand.

The regulator finally arrived.

On 5 February 2026, the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI) started issuing remote and in-person betting licences. The Totalisator Act 1929 and the Betting Act 1931 – laws written when Ireland was a different country entirely – were repealed. Remote operators had until 1 July 2026 to get licensed. In-person operations have until December.

What that means for you:

  • Credit cards are banned as a payment method for gambling.

  • You can set monetary limits on how much you can stake online.

  • The GRAI can fine operators up to €20 million or 10% of turnover for breaches.

If you're betting with an unlicensed operator in Ireland right now, you're the one carrying the risk.

The fixture list got bigger.

391 meetings. A new Good Friday fixture at the Curragh on 3 April – the first time Irish racing has ever been staged on Good Friday. Enhanced Sunday fixtures on the Flat from early May. More racing, better placed, and more opportunities if you're paying attention.

The Festivals That Move the Money

Fairyhouse Easter Festival

The Irish Grand National is the race Irish punters circle months in advance. Three miles five furlongs at Fairyhouse on Easter Monday, €500,000 on the line, and a field that usually runs deep.

Soldier In Milan – a seven-year-old trained by Emmet Mullins, owned by Paul Byrne, and ridden by Donagh Meyler – went off at 6/1 and won by 16 lengths. Showurappreciation was second at 10/1. The Enabler third at 28/1. The winning margin was the biggest in Ireland's most valuable jumps race since Our Duke in 2017.

Punchestown Festival

Five days at the end of April into early May. The last word on the Irish National Hunt season.

Lossiemouth was the story of Friday. The 2/7 favourite cruised to victory in the Boodles Champion Hurdle, giving Willie Mullins his fourth successive win in the race. Paul Townend kept her wide throughout, kicked clear approaching the last, and won by five lengths from Golden Ace.

Earlier in the week, Il Etait Temps won the William Hill Champion Chase at 8/11, adding to his Cheltenham two-mile crown. Energumene – the veteran, the warrior, the horse who'd done the Cheltenham-Punchestown double twice – finished third and was immediately retired. That's racing. One horse's crowning moment is another's farewell.

Bob Olinger signed off with a dream win in the Champion Stayers Hurdle at 4/1. The Henry de Bromhead-trained 11-year-old saw off favourite Teahupo'o (5/4) and Mullins' Jimmy Du Seuil (9/1). A career that deserved a send-off got exactly that.

Galway Races

Seven days at Ballybrit. The longest meeting in Ireland. 2026 runs from Monday 27 July to Sunday 2 August.

The Galway Plate is Wednesday 29 July. €270,000 on the line. Grade 3 handicap. It's the race serious punters build their week around. The Galway Hurdle follows on Thursday 30 July. Ladies' Day is Thursday too, if that's your thing.

The rest of the week? It's a festival. But the markets stay sharp from Monday to Sunday.

Most casual punters miss one thing: early prices are usually longer than the price a horse goes off at.

If Soldier In Milan was 6/1 on the morning of the Irish Grand National and 6/1 at the off, that's one thing. But if you got 8/1 at 9am and he went off at 6/1? You've got value. You got paid more than the market said the horse was worth.

That's the whole game.

Early prices are available on all major Irish and UK meetings at VivatBet. They can be used in win singles, each-way singles, doubles, trebles, accumulators, and Lucky 15s.

An ante-post bet is different. That's for a future feature – a week or more out. The Grand National, Cheltenham, Royal Ascot. Better prices, but if your horse doesn't run, you usually lose your stake. Know the difference before you place the bet.

Available Horse Betting Markets

  • Race winner. This is the traditional type of bet. Back a horse to win.

  • Match bets. Two horses race against each other. You can place a wager against one horse winning over the other without having to care about the race winner.

  • Place markets. You need to determine the horse to arrive within a certain place. Shorter odds, higher strike rate.

  • Betting without. You can eliminate the favorite from consideration. If you want to back a specific horse but do not think it would be able to beat the favorite, this is a betting method to use.

  • Handicaps. The horses are assigned different weights based on their racing power. More competitive racing, often more generous place terms.

Horse Racing Odds and Betting Guidance

Navigating the world of horse racing odds is simple with VivatBet. The cornerstone of betting on horse racing rests on a few standard options:

  • Win – the purest form of the sport; backing a horse odds to win the race.

  • Need a hand calculating your potential returns from an each-way bet? Our user-friendly Bet Calculator and Bet builder tool are here to help.

Everything You Should Know About Each-Way Betting

Each-way means two bets. If you place a €10 each-way bet, the overall amount is €20. You put €10 on the win and another €10 on the place.

The place portion pays at a fraction of the win odds – usually 1/4 or 1/5 – if your horse finishes within the stated number of places.

The Rules That Protect You

Licensed operators must meet strict standards – background checks, premises inspections, compliance notices. The GRAI can apply to the courts to shut down illegal operators.

Your protections as a punter:

  • Credit cards are banned for gambling payments.

  • You can set your own spending limits.

  • You can close your account at any time.

  • The GRAI has an exclusion register that operators must respect.

VivatBet operates under this framework. If you or someone you know needs support, GamblingCare.ie is there for confidential help.

Horse Racing Betting FAQ

What is the minimum stake for a horse racing bet?

You can get involved from as little as €1 on most bets. Some exotic bets like forecasts or tricasts might have a slightly higher minimum, but we keep it accessible so everyone can enjoy the thrill of the race.

What's the difference between a Win and an Each-Way bet?

A Win bet is straightforward – your horse must finish first. An Each-Way bet is essentially two bets in one: a bet to win and a bet to 'place' (usually finish in the top 2, 3, or 4, depending on the race). If your horse wins, you collect on both parts. If it only places, you still get a return on the place part of your bet at a fraction of the win odds. It's a savvy punter's favourite for backing an outsider.

How do I place a bet on horse racing?

Find the race, click on the odds next to your selection, enter your stake in the betslip, and confirm. For Each-Way bets, just remember to tick the 'Each-Way' box in your slip before placing.
